Chapter 1 – Where She Hid It

Chapter 1 – Where She Hid It

The DeLuca Foundation Winter Benefit was designed to make secrets look impossible.

Crystal chandeliers flooded the Grand Regency Ballroom in Manhattan with warm light. White marble gleamed beneath hundreds of polished shoes. Politicians, surgeons, donors, investors, and television personalities stood beneath thirty-foot curtains while a string quartet played near the sweeping staircase.

At the center of it all stood Marcello DeLuca.

Thirty-nine years old, tall, composed, heir to DeLuca Holdings, Marcello had spent his entire adult life learning how to remain calm while people watched him.

Tonight should have been simple.

Smile.

Thank donors.

Introduce his fiancée.

Celebrate the baby everyone already called the next DeLuca heir.

Camille Avery stood beside him in a brilliant fuchsia satin gown, one manicured hand resting over the round curve of her belly.

Five months pregnant, she had told everyone.

Marcello had believed her.

Across the ballroom, Elena Morales balanced a silver serving tray against her palm while keeping one eye on her three-year-old daughter.

Bringing Lily to work had violated every rule Elena normally followed, but her regular babysitter had canceled an hour before the event. Elena’s supervisor, who knew she could not afford to lose another shift, had quietly allowed Lily to stay near the service corridor as long as she remained out of the guests’ way.

That plan had lasted twenty-seven minutes.

Lily had discovered the staircase.

Then the upstairs hallway.

Then, apparently, something Elena wished she had never seen.

The little girl returned clutching the skirt of her navy velvet dress.

“Mommy.”

Elena lowered the tray slightly.

“What is it, baby?”

Lily pointed across the ballroom.

“Mommy, that lady’s belly fell off upstairs.”

Elena stopped breathing.

Two guests nearby turned.

Then three.

Camille heard.

Her smile disappeared for half a second before returning with remarkable speed.

Marcello looked toward Lily.

Elena bent quickly. “Lily—”

Camille laughed.

The laugh was too polished.

“She’s only three,” Camille said. “She must’ve misunderstood something.”

Lily’s small face tightened.

“I didn’t misunderstand!”

The ballroom seemed to shrink around them.
